What is a vehicle appraisal?

A vehicle appraisal is an informed opinion of value based on the specific vehicle and the purpose of the valuation. For someone looking to sell, the most useful number is usually a realistic purchase offer—not simply an optimistic asking price found in online advertisements.

Listings show what sellers hope to receive. They do not always show the final transaction price, how long a vehicle has been advertised, what reconditioning it needs or whether the advertised vehicle truly matches yours. A market-informed appraisal accounts for those differences.

Appraisal versus offer

An appraisal explains a likely value range. A purchase offer is the amount a buyer is prepared to pay after reviewing the vehicle, its documents and any lien information.

The details that change a vehicle's value

Exact configuration

Year, make and model are only the beginning. Engine, drivetrain, trim, factory packages, seating configuration, body style and desirable options can materially affect demand.

Condition and required work

Mechanical faults, warning lights, tires, brakes, glass, body damage, interior wear and evidence of poor repairs affect the cost and risk of preparing a vehicle for resale. Honest disclosure saves time and helps prevent an appraisal from changing after inspection.

History and documentation

Service records, accident history, registration history, number of keys and recent repair invoices help show how the vehicle has been cared for. A vehicle history report can also reveal information that is not obvious during a walk-around.

Market timing

Demand changes with fuel costs, season, model reputation, financing conditions and the amount of similar inventory available. Specialty vehicles can behave differently from everyday transportation.

How to request a useful preliminary appraisal

Provide enough information to identify the exact vehicle and show its current condition. A short, accurate description is more helpful than general phrases such as “fully loaded” or “excellent.”

  • Send the VIN or exact trim where available.
  • Include current kilometres or operating hours.
  • Photograph all four corners, both sides, interior, dashboard and odometer.
  • Add close photographs of damage rather than hiding it.
  • Mention warning lights, major repairs and known accident history.
  • State whether money is owing and identify the lender.

For rare, modified or collectible vehicles, include build sheets, authenticity records, restoration invoices, modification lists and provenance where relevant.

Why an in-person appraisal may still be required

Photos and descriptions help us decide whether the vehicle is a fit and prepare for an inspection, but they cannot show every mechanical, structural or documentation issue. Before a final purchase, we may need to see the vehicle, confirm identification numbers, review original documents and verify the loan or lien position.

At our fully equipped Vancouver facility, our team can inspect everyday vehicles as well as performance, enthusiast, classic and unusual vehicles. More than 30 years of buying, selling, sourcing and servicing vehicles informs the assessment.

How Your Vehicle Pro handles the appraisal

  1. You submit the vehicle details or text photos.
  2. We review the information and ask focused follow-up questions.
  3. When needed, we arrange an in-person inspection at 1581 West 4th Avenue.
  4. We explain a straightforward, no-obligation purchase offer.
  5. If you accept and the documentation is complete, we prepare the purchase paperwork and arrange payment.

We do not require you to accept an offer, and we consider vehicles that are imperfect, unusual or still financed. Same-day payment is available in many cases once the inspection, ownership, identification and lien requirements are satisfied.

Frequently asked appraisal questions

Does an accident automatically make my vehicle unsellable?

No. The nature, quality and documentation of the repairs matter. Share what you know so the history can be considered honestly.

Should I repair the vehicle before the appraisal?

Not automatically. Some repairs improve saleability, while others cost more than the value they add. Request an appraisal first if you are unsure.

Can you appraise a vehicle outside Vancouver?
